UPDATE: We have a winner, and, aptly, her name is Joy. THANK YOU to everyone who entered with great comments; many of the restaurants are already in the guide, and I’ll be researching the ones that weren’t.
[Many of the comments are not showing up anymore, but know that you were indeed entered into the drawing over at Random.org]
Also — if you entered here or through my Twitter account, I’ll be emailing you a little gift next week. Thank you again!
If you’re new to this site, I should introduce myself: Howdy! My name is Holly. I like to eat.
I mean it: I love food and am not shy about it. And when I say food, I mean real food that’s been raised right: grass-fed beef. Pastured roast chicken. Succulent yellow tomatoes from my friend Margie‘s magnificent farm. Real sourdough bread.
I love to cook. Love it. It relaxes me, and it keeps my family happy and healthy. Here’s some homemade no-sugar granola with yogurt I made recently from a friend’s raw, organic grass-fed milk. The yogurt is thick enough to cut with a knife, and it makes me happy:
Now, other women I know like to duck into the mall. They consider me slightly impaired when I tell them I’d prefer to go to the farmer’s market. If you’re still reading this, you’re probably similarly impaired. (I like you.) Oh, and I used to avoid restaurants as much as possible, because I, being a certified Type A/R (always right), don’t trust what’s in most restaurant food. Perhaps you feel the same way and cook all the time to avoid all those pesky hormones and antibiotics and pesticides.
The thing is, every once in a while, you just want to put down your spatula and be the recipient for a change.
Well. Here’s the cool part: you can! In my former life, I was a reporter, and I was flung around the country all the time. All the time, and often at the last minute. I couldn’t exactly avoid restaurants, so I looked for a guidebook to places that served real food. There weren’t any guides! So. Figuring I couldn’t possibly be the only “real foodie” out there, and being a reporter, and loving the idea of — get this — eating my research — I wrote one.
Ta-DA! More than 200 local restaurants, from Maui to Maine, that serve grassfed, organic and/or local food.
Here’s another cool part: I’m giving away a copy. Food Renegade suggested that people might want a swanky little guide before Valentine’s Day. (She’s pretty efficient, that Food Renegade. Practical and romantic; I like that in a lass.) So! Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to leave a comment here telling me (comment section overwhelmed) follow me on Twitter and tweet me what healthy restaurants you like. I’m working on an update, you see, and want to research as many new places as possible.
Hurry! We pick the winner on February 12th.
As you were.
Oh! And you might consider subscribing to this site. (You can find the link up on the left.) I give my subscribers tidbits that don’t appear on this site: recipes, travel tips and play-by-play podcasts that you can take to the stove and cook along with. We have great fun here, nourishing both our bodies and our brains. And, sometimes, we yodel.
In peas,
Holly

We don’t have many real food eateries here in Norman, OK, but The Earth Deli is one of them. Despite their emphasis on vegetarian/vegan options, they offer sustainably-raised turkey, sprouted bread, and local veggies. Yum!
There’s a restaurant in SW Missouri, the town of Rogersville, called the Farmer’s Daughter. They actually raise most of the food for the restaurant, including the grass-fed meat!
We love to eat at the Ivy Inn, Maya, and Revolutionary Soup restaurants in the Charlottesville VA area because they try hard to include local, sustainably-grown ingredients in their meals.
Hoping you choose me since it would be a great present for my birthday (2/12)!
Many thanks! Malena
Oh, Holly, I love food more than shopping, too!
The Village Cafe in Bryan/College Station, Texas serves excellent, fresh food–local and seasonal as much as possible. It also functions as an art gallery and coffee shop. In a not so cool country town, this spot is a bright light. Not that you or anyone else would ever have a reason to come down here…but pick me, pick me!
A woman after my own heart! And stomach.
Thanks for all the great suggestions, everyone!
I’m sure there have to be some real food restaurants near me (southern California), but I don’t know of any! I guess I really do need to get your guide!
