I have found it. THE place in Rome. I ate there nearly half a dozen times with my family, and we found that it serves, by far, the best, most traditional, and most sustainably sourced “cucina tipica” we could find in the center of the city – the antipasti, pastas, contorni, artichokes, fruit, desserts and even the coffee are all top-notch. (Remember that my mamma is Italian, and that I was born there. Neither of us is Roman, but my Roman uncle fully approves of our choice. I know this because when I told him we descended upon this place night after night without shame, he saluted me with a glass of his best vino, which he usually only does if his team — Roma, natch — wins.)
You’ll likely be the only non-Italians in the place: everyone we saw here — from parents urging their wee ones to “Mangia!” to the shy couple on their first date who found our video-ing so curious — spoke with pronounced Roman accents. And the waiters! They’re a bevy of septuagenarian wonders who make it their job to rib you, to jostle each other, and to toss a Prego! (“You’re welcome!”) your way that sounds like it came out of the pinched chords of a castrated opera singer. They do this while doling out impeccable service. It’s an irresistible combo.
This restaurant is definitely going in the international edition of my organic/grassfed/local dining guide, Healthy Eats Here! So are tips on what to order and how best to get a reservation. If you’re a subscriber to HollyHickman.com, then check your email; I sent you the name of this place earlier today. (If you’d like to join the party, please sign up at left. This is a growing site for smart folks who like to feed their minds and bodies with nourishing deliciousness and adventure.)
I hope you enjoy this little foray into La Dolce Vita. Oh, and a tip: when in Rome — in December — bring an umbrella.

P.S. I’m adding this as a contribution to Real Food Wednesday, kindly hosted over at Cheeseslave.com.
