To hop right back into my friend’s kayak as soon as it warms up here. The other day, I was paddling away not far from a secluded mangrove, reciting a poem I’d just memorized. (I know, it sounds totally geeky, but there’s a reason behind it.) There’s a line about fathers in the poem. I had buried my father four years to the day that I was kayaking, and the moment I said the word “Father,” I heard a noise and looked up:
Two dolphins, swimming in unison, glided past my kayak – so close I could almost touch them. I am a skeptic and don’t know if or what it “means,” but I sat there and watched them in their infinite grace and, for once, cried tears of happiness about him.
Beautiful.
