Happy Friday! Today, subscribers to this blog are getting an extra email from me; it’s the new weekly newsletter I send out to buyers of Healthy Eats Here!, my organic/grassfed/local dining guide. Each week, I bring you the latest news on specials around the country, plus a chef interview and tips. If you’d like to get a taste of it, click HERE or on the photo below, which shows a partial view of the letter. If you’d like to subscribe to it, click HERE.
As for my interview with Chef Critchley, click HERE to listen. (Note: you might need a Quicktime plugin.)
King Tut likely died not from murder but of malaria and a degenerative bone disease: it seems that in the ancient world, even power, money and prestige couldn’t buy you what’s most important.
Apparently, some men have been known to lactate. Yes. I’ve been reading Jared Diamond’s book Why is Sex Fun?, which takes an evolutionary look at a favorite activity, and factoids like that one have stunned me out of my chair. Great little book. (And yes; he’s the fine mind behind Guns, Germs and Steel, another great read.)
Current Travel Musings:
AA is offering some good discounts between Denver and Austin, plus a few other cities. Check it out here.
Current Eye Candy:
I’ve been enjoying this fashion blog lately. And this one.
The Space Shuttle is set to come back this weekend. Did you know that it has no engines when it lands? It comes in like a glider, and you have one shot to stick the landing perfectly. One. And, because of its shape, it comes in really, really, really steeply; that’s why they call it the flying brick. I have an idea of who the best pilot is, but his brother would get mad. (Twin astronauts. Really.)
I really miss covering shuttle landings, when you realize that these teeny tiny people inside this huge, steaming, breathing contraption were just in SPACE! Quite nifty. Check out the mission here at NASA.gov. Gorgeous spacewalk pics.
Here’s hoping you have a fantastic weekend. By the way, I need some new books to read — fiction, history, science, non-fiction…I’ll take it all. Suggestions?
Warmly,
Holly
P.S. Happy Birthday, Renae! And, yes, I’m still older than you. xoxo
It is a lovely, heart-warming story told from a dog’s perspective. I warn that you will need tissues on hand now and again but it is ultimately uplifting, laugh-out-loud funny and philosophical.
Also “Freakonomics” and “Super Freakonomics” by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, which look at social and economic trends from a fresh and interesting perspective:

I just finished reading “The Art Of Racing In The Rain” by Garth Stein and highly recommend it:
